Change Your Major or Minor

We are excited you want to pursue a major or minor in the Norton School of Human Ecology! Current University of Arizona students should follow the steps below to change majors. Contact nortonminoradvising@arizona.edu for general questions.

Incoming University of Arizona students should visit the Next Steps website to change their major: https://nextsteps.arizona.edu/. You will be able to add a minor after you complete new student orientation.

Steps to declare a major or minor

Declaring a major with the Norton School of Human Ecology starts with a self-paced online information session. You must have a 2.0 GPA or above in order to change your major. We will notify you by email if we are unable to process your change of major form due to minimum 2.0 GPA requirement.

Please allow up to 5 business days for the change of major request to process once you complete the online session. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 5 business days please email the advisor.

Only FITS academic advisors may declare a FITS major or minor for students.

Declare the FITS Major

Follow these steps to change your major to Fashion Industry's Science and Technology (FITS). For questions, contact an academic advisor:

  1. Download the catalog checklist to review FITS Major requirements.
  2. All students interested in changing their major to FITS must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Major Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. Once your change of major is processed, make an appointment with FITS advisor Sarah Kleinfeld.

Declare the FITS Minor

Complete these steps to declare the minor or contact FITS academic advisor for more information:

  1. Review the FITS minor requirements to confirm your interest in the program.
    1. FITS minor requires a minimum 2.0 GPA
  2. All students interested in adding the FITS minor must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. The Student Services Office will review and approve new minor requests weekly, so you should expect to see the minor added within 5-10 business days. You will be notified via email that you have been accepted to the minor.
    1. Classes are on a first come, first served basis. You will be expected to enroll yourself in courses through UAccess.

Only HDFS academic advisors may declare an HDFS major or minor for students.

Declare the HDFS Major

Follow these steps to change your major to Human Development & Family Science (HDFS) or contact an academic advisor for more information:

  1. Download the catalog checklist and sample graduation plan to review HDFS major requirements.
  2. All students interested in changing their major to HDFS must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Major Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. Once your change of major is processed, make an appointment with HDFS advisor Elizabeth Collins.

Declare the HDFS Minor

Complete these steps to declare the minor or contact HDFS academic advisor Elizabeth Collins (eamartin@arizona.edu) for more information:

  1. Review the HDFS minor requirements to confirm your interest in the program.
    1. The HDFS Minor is available to main campus and Arizona Online campus students.
    2. 2.0 minimum GPA is required to enroll.
  2. All students interested in adding the minor must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. HDFS advisors will review and approve new minor requests weekly, so you should expect to see the minor added within 5-10 business days. You will be notified via email that you have been accepted to the minor.
  4. After priority registration, and once admitted to the minor, you will be able to register for HDFS courses.

Only PFFP academic advisors may declare a PFFP major or minor for students.

Declare the PFFP Major

Follow these steps to change your major to Personal & Family Financial Planning (PFFP) or contact an academic advisor for more information:

  1. Download the catalog checklist and sample graduation plan to review PFFP major requirements.
  2. All students interested in changing their major to PFFP must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Major Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. Once your change of major is processed, make an appointment with PFFP advisor Tiffany Ortega.

Declare the PFFP Minor

Complete these steps to declare the minor or contact PFFP academic advisor Tiffany Ortega (tortega@arizona.edu) for more information:

  1. Review the PFFP minor requirements to confirm your interest in the program.
    1. requires a 2.0 minimum GPA to enroll
  2. All students interested in adding the minor must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. PFFP advisors will review and approve new minor requests weekly, so you should expect to see the minor added within 5-10 business days. You will be notified via email that you have been accepted to the minor.

Only RCSC academic advisors may declare an RCSC major or minor for students.

Declare the RCSC Major

Follow these steps to change your major to Retailing & Consumer Science (RCSC) or contact an academic advisor for more information:

  1. Download the catalog checklist and sample graduation plan to review RCSC major requirements.
  2. All students interested in changing their major to RCSC must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Major Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. Once your change of major is processed, make an appointment with RCSC advisor Amye Chaparro.

Declare the RCSC Minor

Complete these steps to declare the minor or contact RCSC academic advisor Amye Chaparro (chaparro@arizona.edu) for more information:

  1. Review the RCSC minor requirements to confirm your interest in the program.
    1. requires a 2.0 minimum GPA to enroll
  2. All students interested in adding the minor must complete an Online Information Session. Submit the Change of Form located at the end of the information session to finalize your request.
  3. RCSC advisors will review and approve new minor requests weekly, so you should expect to see the minor added within 5-10 business days. You will be notified via email that you have been accepted to the minor.

Complete these steps to declare the minor or contact the academic advisor Amye Chaparro (chaparro@arizona.edu) for more information:

  1. Review the Digital Retailing Minor to confirm your interest in the program.
    1. Requires a 2.0 minimum GPA to enroll.
  2. Complete the Online Information Session and follow next steps outlined at the end of the session to finalize your request.
  3. Norton School advisors will review and approve new minor requests weekly, so you should expect to see the minor added within 5-10 business days. You will be notified via email that you have been accepted to the minor.

Declaring an online certificate

Our undergraduate certificates in Digital Retailing, Foundations of Retail Management and Financial Planning are offered through the Arizona Online campus. Contact the certificate academic advisor Tiffany Ortega (tortega@arizona.edu) to learn more about enrollment.
