The Garden Kitchen Volunteers

Part-time and unpaid.

The Garden Kitchen offers seed-to-table gardening and cooking education, which means families learn about every step of bringing a healthy meal to the kitchen table — from growing and purchasing to preparing and storing. As a seed-to-table program, we aim to increase families’ food security by teaching community members the basics of growing their own food and shopping on a budget.

GK programs work to empower Pima County residents to build community wellness and make healthier choices through food, fitness, and gardening education.

  • We are a “seed to table” program that works with communities to minimize food scarcity through gardening.
  • We do educational programming at community sites and at GK that aims to help build skills in choices of food, food preparation, and making positive choices in nutrition.
  • We encourage and facilitate physical activity as a vehicle to holistic health.

Together with our partners, we work to modify policy, and create systems and environmental change, to make healthy choices practical and available to all community members.

Volunteers participate in programming at GK, including :

  • Weekly gardening at our on-site garden (every Thursday at 7 am);
  • Assist with culinary classes in our commercial kitchen (includes all duties, including learning kitchen operation, clean-up), where you can learn some culinary techniques and also get fed 😊
  • Work with our community sites that include early childhood education programs, senior facilities, subsidized public housing site, among others.  Volunteers accompany GK team to these sites to work on gardening, physical activity and nutrition education/food demonstrations.

Volunteers are required to have a Fingerprint Clearance Card.
