Declaring the Retailing and Consumer Science Minor
The Retailing and Consumer Science (RCSC) minor is complementary to Pre-Business and business-oriented degree programs.
With a minor in Retailing and Consumer Sciences (RCSC), you will be able to build your knowledge and skills in the rapidly-growing consumer products and services sector to supplement a wide range of majors. As a RCSC Minor, you can customize your courses to focus on retail management, merchandising, consumer marketing, product development, customer experience, and sustainable consumption.
RCSC Majors may not enroll in the RCSC Minor.

What courses do I need to take?
The RCSC minor requires 18 or 19 units depending on the quantitative reasoning course you choose.
You must maintain a 2.0 minor GPA to graduate. View the RCSC Minor Handout.
Two Required Courses (6 units)
- RCSC 114 Introduction to Retailing (3 units)
- RCSC 240 Consumer Behavior (3 units)
One Quantitative Reasoning Course (3-4 units) - Choose ONE Option Below
- RCSC 205 AND RCSC 205A Merchandise Planning and Control (3 units) with Lab (1 unit)
OR - Research Methods: FCSC 202, PSY 290A, or SOC 374 ( 3 units)
OR - RCSC 260 Shopper Data and Business Analytics (3 units)
RCSC Minor Electives (9 units)
- Choice of three upper-division RCSC elective courses from RCSC Minor elective list (see list below)
RCSC Minor Requirements for Students Who Started the Minor Before 2022
Required Coursework - 10 units
- Retail Math or RCSC 205 Merchandise Planning and Control (3 units) - no prerequisite required to enroll
- RCSC 114 Introduction to Retailing (3 units) - no prerequisite required to enroll
- RCSC 316 Retail Business Analysis and Decision Making (3 units) - prerequisites: Statistics (PSY 230 or SOC 274 or FCSC 201 or MGMT 276), and RCSC 214, and Accounting [(ACCT 200 and ACCT 210) or ACCT 250] and Math (MATH 112 or MATH 113 or 115B or MATH 116 or MATH 125 or equivalent) and Economics [(ECON 200) or (ECON 201A and 201B)].
- RCSC 316A MS Excel and Retail Business Analysis (1 unit) - must be taken concurrently with RCSC 216
